CURRENT SET UP

Depending on the gig and the music, I'll use different drum set-ups and combinations of cymbals. Below is a guide to 3 of my basic set-ups but all are subject to slight variation. For instance I may decide that a certain cymbal would sound better in the context of one particular ensemble or room so I'll go with that rather than what I've listed below. Or I might choose to use a 22" kick drum in a rock setting to give me more bottom end. Having said that, the kits below are generally pretty accurate for the different genres listed.

ALL of my drums are Yamaha. I endorse Yamaha drums and have played them exclusively for 19 years as at February 2006. I've found that other companies make pretty good drums but you seem to have to work harder to get a sound out of them. With Yamaha, they sound great out of the box and when you hit a Yamaha drum, it just seems to give you so much back! And that goes for all of the different timbers from Oak, to Maple and Birch.

The hardware is the most logical, simple and elegant design with amazing strength and consistancy. It's easy to position any drum or cymbal exactly where you want it and you know that it ain't going anywhere!

I've said it before and I mean it when I say that if I didn't have an endorsement deal with Yamaha, I would still play their drums!

My cymbals are all Sabian, again which I have played exclusively for a long time. From 1990 I have endorsed Sabian cymbals and have found that they have always provided an amazing selection of cymbals that offer the colours to play any style of music. From beautiful dark sounding jazzy ride cymbals like the Manhattans and the new Vault series to wonderfull thin glassy crashes like the Evolution series as well as great clean and bright crashes like the AAXs which cut through any volume, Sabian makes a cymbal to suit any music.

For my sticks I choose between two Vic Firth models determined by the music I'm playing. For lighter, jazzier styles, I use the SD10 Swinger. It's made of Canadian Maple and is therefor quite light. This allows me to have a thicker shaft which I prefer. For rock and louder playing I'll use the Vic Firth standard 5B. I also use Vic Firth brushes, (the purple rubber ones) and the Vic Firth T1 Custom General for light mallet work such as cymbal rolls, (although the Evolution crashes are so sensitive that I'll sometimes just play cymbal swells with sticks and you can't hear the individual notes!!). I use the Vic Firth Rute 505 plastic Brush/Stick too for that in between stick and brush sound.

I have recently begun to endorse, Beyer Dynamic Microphones and Headphones. I use the Opus Drum pack for live work which includes Opus 87s for the rack toms, Opus 88 for snare and floor tom, Opus 99 for kick and MC 930s for overheards and hi-hat. For recording I'll use a combination of the Opus mics with a Beyer M88 on the kick in conjuction with Yamaha's Sub-Kick for extra bottom end.

So here are my current set-ups as of 2006.

Cheers Gordo.
